Work in Progress
Details of work currently being developed will be shown here to keep users informed of ongoing work on the MAGIC project.
Following feedback from many users, the scope of MAGIC will be expanded to include core environmental designation and scheme data from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the marine environment with the purpose of meeting the needs of MAGIC partners with GB-wide or UK-wide interests. Data that is added will contribute to meeting the aim of MAGIC which is "to act as the source of definitive information about environmental designations and schemes for the UK".
The first phase of this work has been the addition of datasets for the Coastal and Marine Resource Atlas which was made available through MAGIC in November 2005.
In addition to the extending the scope of MAGIC, equivalent systems are also planned in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Please contact us for more information.
The MAGIC metadata standard is currently under review to bring it in line with current National and International Standards.
ISO 19115 (Geographic Information - Metadata) was published in May 2003. However, ISO 19139 (Geographic Information - Metadata - XML schema implementation) is the standard that aims to define an XML encoding for the metadata elements defined in ISO 19115 and this is currently only at ISO Committee Draft stage, which means a study/ballot has been initiated. This should hopefully be finalised later this year.
Another standard, UK Gemini (a GEo-spatial Metadata INteroperability Initiative) was published in October 2004. The UK GEMINI Discovery Metadata Standard is a defined element set for describing geo-spatial, discovery level metadata within the United Kingdom. It is derived from ISO 19115 and the UK eGovernment Metadata Standard (eGMS).
The UK GEMINI profile, which will replace the GIgateway Discovery Metadata Specifications (the NGDF Standard) as the UK's national geospatial metadata profile, allows for the creation of discovery metadata with both ISO 19115 and the national e-Government Metadata Standard (eGMS), ensuring compliance with both.
GIgateway is currently working on redevelopment of MetaGenie, the downloadable tool that can be used for publishing metadata on GIgateway. A beta version is now available for download from GIgateway that will creates metadata in line with this brand new national profile.
MAGIC will adopt the UK Gemini standard as its baseline standard later on this year.
Where possible, links will be established with the websites of other organisations. For any suggestions of websites or portals to which MAGIC can connect or for requests to link to MAGIC, please contact us.
Work has been undertaken with the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) to investigate the best way of linking MAGIC to the NBN Gateway. A user-testing exercise with a demonstration site, along with the findings of similar projects have identified main requirements and the next stage of this work will identify the best way of implementing a live link to the NBN Gateway. Again, please contact us with any suggestions or requirements.
