When I click on the map I get the error message
"Response from previous request(s) not received."
This message is displayed when you click on the map when the
server hasn't yet responded to the previous request that you made. The server is
only able to process one request at a time - for example if you zoom in on
the map and then try to search for a placename before the new map has
redrawn, you will get this message as you have effectively sent two requests
to the server.
Solution: Click 'OK' and continue using the map.
However, if you continue to receive the
error message, you will have to reload the Interactive Map.
How?
Once you have sent the request, the retrieving map process can only
be stopped if you are prepared to reload the map and lose your current map
display. To do this, press the ESC key while the "Loading Map" message is
displayed and then click on the 'Reload Map' button
above the map, to the right of the toolbar.
When you launch the interactive map and specify a location to view, for example a postcode sector or a grid reference,
the map opens with the specified location highlighted. It will be either with a boundary and hatching if you have
chosen a large area (e.g. postcode sector, county or government office region) or with a small triangle showing the
grid reference or the centre of the town you chose.
Why is there no scale bar on the printed map output?
The scale of the map can only be calculated approximately and isn't accurate enough for printed output as people may use the printed map to make measurements.
When I print the map I can't fit the map and legend onto the same page.
After you have generated the printable map you will need to alter the page layout settings to 'Landscape' before
printing it. Go to the File menu and choose Page Setup, and change the Orientation from Portrait to Landscape.
No - the MAGIC interactive map is designed only to allow viewing of data. Users can add or remove layers and
navigate through the data as with a standard GIS, but there are no editing functions.
No - due to the number of datasets held in MAGIC the colours have been preset. This also means that the user
will see the same colours and symbols for each dataset every time they use the map.
All the MAGIC topics by default allow you to view the data in GB National Grid projection.
This is suitable for the majority of the topics as they only contain land based datasets for
Great Britain. However, some of the marine datasets within the "Coastal and Marine Atlas" topic,
are more suited to be viewed in an alternative projection (ED50 Mercator). Therefore (within the
"Coastal and Marine Atlas" topic only), the "Change projection" tool will allow you to view the
data in ED50 Mercator rather than GB National Grid. It is advisable to change your projection
before selecting your area of interest and the layers you wish to view as the default layers
will be displayed after using the 'Change Projection' tool.
Note that when you are viewing data in ED50 Mercator projection, not all MAGIC tools and layers
are available. The following tools are not available: Site Check (point), Site Check (Grid Ref),
Measure Distance, Measure Area, Search by Postcode and Search by Grid Ref.
As it is not possible to re-project the Ordnance Survey raster base mapping, this data is not
included when viewing the Coastal and Marine Resource Atlas topic in ED50 Mercator. As an alternative,
this topic contains the Motorway, A Road and B Road feature layers of the Ordnance Survey
Meridian product.
Once in ED50 Mercator projection you can revert back to GB National Grid simply by clicking on
the "Change Projection" button again. The projection currently being used is indicated on the grey
status bar at the bottom of the page.
Why don't I get any co-ordinates displayed in my status bar?
If you are using the Mozilla Firefox web browser, you need to alter the default JavaScript
settings to enable you to view any status bar message. The following steps need to be carried out:
From the Tools menu, select Options.
Select Web Features in the left hand pane.
Tick the Enable JavaScript option and click on the Advanced button
Check the box to allow scripts to "change status bar text".
Each dataset has a different update regime, which you can find in the Dataset Information
facility. Monthly updates are scheduled, usually for the beginning of the month, and any datasets that change are
amended and new datasets are added. Please note that not all datasets are updated monthly. You can check the update
dates for the next few months on the update page, and you can check after the update date
which datasets have been amended or added at What's New.
Is data available for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
The MAGIC application is currently focused on England as this is the common area covered by each of the
eight partner organisations. Some Welsh and Scottish datasets have been collated as part of the Coastal and Marine
Resource Atlas. These datasets are available through the following topics:

Design my Own Topic
Datasets within MAGIC that currently only cover England may also be
available for Scotland and Wales. Some of the partners do have
responsibilities that that extend beyond England, for example the Forestry
Commission and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Therefore we would
encourage you to contact these organisations to explore whether data is
available for Scotland and Wales for the datasets they are responsible for.
Other partners such as English Nature and English Heritage, cover only
England although similar data is often available from their corresponding
organisations in the devolved administrations.
You can download selected datasets by going to the Dataset Information and Download facility.
A link will be provided allowing users to download the data, if appropriate - due to licencing restrictions by the organisations
responsible for the data and the Ordnance Survey, some datasets are not available to the general public. If this is the case it will
be made clear on the download page. If the data is available from a source other than MAGIC a link will be provided either to another
website or to an email address.
MAGIC doesn't contain any information about registered field numbers. You can however use
MAGIC to obtain a grid reference for a point by using the 'Where Am I' tool .

How do I obtain more information about the soilscape classifications?
As the description for each of the soilscape classifications is long, we have been unable
to include this information in the legend of the interactive map. As an alternative the full key with text descriptions
is available.
You can also use the 'identify' button in MAGIC when you are viewing the soilscape information.
Click on the identify button then on the map, and the description of the soilscape for
the point that you clicked will be shown. Above the table containing this information are
two links. The first is a link to summary information (as a PDF file) which contains
information about how the Soilscape classes relate to the land cover. The second link
directs you to the full key for the soilscape layer.
The final method of accessing the soilscape descriptions is by looking at the static maps.
If you open any of the regional soilscape static maps, you can view the full descriptions
by clicking on the legend of the map. If you open the national static map, the full
descriptions are available as part of the map.
Why are there different groups of attributes listed when I use the Identify or Find tools?
Sometimes when using the 'Identify' or 'Find' tool, you may see different sets of attributes
listed in the results window. For example this image shows the results when using the Identify
tool on a National Nature Reserve (NNR):
The reason that more than one set of attributes is displayed is because this layer (NNR in this
case) is created from up to 3 separate datasets. One from England, one from Scotland and one
from Wales. If you use 'Identify' or 'Find' on a feature that crosses the national boundary, the
attributes from each country will be displayed.
The attribute fields listed are different as each country collects different attributes for the
same layer. In this example the NNR straddles the English / Welsh border so both set of
attributes are listed. The England attributes are listed first (Name, Reference and Hectares)
followed by the Wales attributes (Reference, Name and Cartesian Area).
Care must be taken when looking at any area values listed in this way as areas may be different,
depending on where the boundary of the feature is. In the example shown above, the NNR in the
Welsh dataset stops at the Wales / England boundary, whereas the NNR in the English dataset has been
captured in it's entirety.
This is not the ideal way to show datasets that cross national boundaries, however it is the most
suitable way at present. We will continue to work to find an improved solution.
Do you have information about JCAs (Joint Character Areas) for my Environmental Stewardship (ES) application?
The JCA data layer can be viewed in the Joint Character Areas Topic and Design my Own Topic. If ES applicants are uncertain which JCA
they are in, they are encouraged to select the JCA with the landscape characteristics that are the best fit with their land. There is
no need to check which side of the approximate boundaries they fall. Further information about JCAs along with the HLS targeting statements,
is available from the Defra website -

How can I get hold of the NUTS (Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics) boundary definitions?
NUTS boundary definitions can be found on the National Statistics website
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/geography/nuts.asp. The data we are currently using is from pre July 2003, therefore NUTS4 is used,
instead of LAU (Local Administrative Units) 1. This will be updated on the website later in the year.
How can I link to a feature in MAGIC from my website?
Full instructions are given in the document Linking to MAGIC via URLs.
This tells you how to open the map zoomed in to a particular place or with a specific feature, for example an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, highlighted.
The supported web browsers for MAGIC's interactive map are Internet
Explorer version 5 and later, Netscape Navigator version 7 and later and
Firefox 1.04 . We believe the interactive map should work on the Opera browser,
but due to the nature of the internet mapping software and code it is not
possible to make it compatible with every browser available.
Will having pop-ups blocked or disabled cause MAGIC a problem?
Yes it will. Some of the search functions in MAGIC open new pop-up windows. If you have
your pop-ups disabled, the application will unfortunately not be able to complete the
search.

No - the interactive map and supporting information is available to all users with internet access without the need
to register. The only part of the website that requires information to be submitted by the user is the
Dataset Information and Download facility, where as a condition of the licence
agreement users must submit their name, email address, organisation, address, postcode and telephone number. This is
so that we are able to monitor how the data is being used. This is a free service.
Do you have a mailing list to notify people when datasets are updated?
At present no notifications of update are sent out - if you want to keep up to date with new additions or amendments, please check
the What's New page which is updated every time we make changes to the website, data and
interactive map.
