Scale Limits assigned to Map Layers

Some layers will not be displayed outside certain scale limits. When the scale limit is reached, the layer name will become 'greyed out' in the list of layers and the information will not appear in the map window.

These limits have been set for one or both of the following reasons:

  1. To improve the speed of the application

    Some layers have been captured at a large scale and are therefore very detailed. Displaying these layers at a small scale takes a considerable time to be drawn on the map.
  2. To display layers at appropriate scales

    Because digital information is captured at a particular scale, it is not appropriate to show this information at scales that differ greatly from the scale of capture.

The table below shows the limits that have been set for all such layers in the MAGIC application.

To view a greyed-out layer easily:

  1. Refer to the table below to find out at what scales the layer becomes visible.
  2. Click on the layer list button List of Layers (above the map legend) to display the list of layers.
  3. If there is not a check in the box next to the layer's name, click on the box to switch the layer on. Show Me
  4. Put the maximum scale (or a lower number) into the scale box below the map and click 'Go'. Show Me
  5. The map should then change to that scale and the layer will be visible.
